LECTURE
Introduction to basic composition :
  • Focal Point : a key element that helps viewers' eyes naturally settle on the important pieces of the design
  • Scale & Hierarchy : scale is often used to help communicate hierarchy by drawing attention toward and away from certain elements
  • Balance The Elements : think of each element as having 'weigh' to it.
  • White Space : most known as empty space, to balance the main focus of a composition. It helps the design "breathe"
Rule of Thirds
Is the process of dividing an image into thirds, using two horizontal and two vertical lines. If the important element is placed on those intersection points, it produces a natural image. It is a way to use composition techniques that are in line with what's naturally pleasing to the eye, creatively use negative space, and create conversation between the subject and background.

Golden Ratio
A mathematical ratio that is commonly found in nature and fosters an organic and natural-looking composition that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The golden ratio creates and appreciates a sense a beauty through harmony and proportion. It is a useful guideline for determining dimensions of the layout.

TASK
Mr Fauzi told us to bring magazines to make a collage for this weeks project. After deciding on the cut outs that we are going to use, we started assembling our compositions. He told us to make 3 pre-compositions before gluing them on the background.

Pre Composition 1

Pre Composition 2
Fig 2.1.2 Pre Composition 2 (01/10/2025)

Pre Composition 3

From the 3 compositions, Mr Fauzi chose the 3rd composition.

REFLECTION
This task helps us understand more about the different compositions to make a collage more interesting or appealing to the public. This task also shows that we can combine different types of elements and still make an interesting collage out of it. It was very fun because I enjoy doing these types of projects and it helped me understand the importance of composition in photography or in this case, collage.
