Understanding Letterform
In letterforms, the uppercase letterforms suggest symmetry. but in reality, it is not symmetrical.
Fig 1.1.1 Understanding Letterform (20/10/2025)

When comparing these two fonts, the arc of lowercase letter "a" are different. How the stems of the letterforms finish and how the bowls meet the stem are different.
Fig 1.1.2 Difference (20/10/2025)

Maintaining X-Height
X-Height generally describes the size of the lowercase letterforms, but keep in mind that curved strokes (such as 's') must rise above the median in order to appear the same size as the others.

Letters / Form / Counterform
  • Counterform is very important for readability. When letters are joined to form words, the counterform includes the spaces between them.
  • Examining a letter in close detail can help understand the form and counter of a letter. It can help explain the process of letter-making.
Letters / Contrast
Contrast is very important in design and typography. When dealing with information, we need contrast to help differentiate it.

Week 6
A brief explanation of what we need to do for task 2 and a tutorial on how to make task 2 in Illustrator and In Design. Also a reminder to finish task 1 before the deadline on 31st October 2025.

Week 7
Consultation on task 2 and fixing the layouts for task 2. Submissions are due next week.

TASK
For this task, we were asked to make 3 type expression from the 3 articles given. I chose the article called "Bauhaus: The Movement That Changed Design". First, I started by doing some research and looking up references to make the headline.
Fig 2.1.1 Mood Board (31/10/2025)

After that, I started making the sketches using IbisPaintX. I came up with 3 sketches for the overall layouts. Here are the sketches.
Fig 2.1.2 Sketches (31/10/2025)

After getting some feedback, I fixed my sketches and made 1 new sketch for the layouts. Here are the new and fixed sketches.
Fig 2.1.3 Final Sketches (31/10/2025)

After getting the approval, I started digitalizing my sketches using Adobe Illustrator. I used the same techniques that I used for the first task 'type expression' and made changes to the words like the sketches that I made.

Then I asked for some suggestions, Mr Max said that the 1st sketch is okay, 2nd I need to make the words bigger, and for the 3rd I need to make a new one because it is too boring. So, I fixed the headers, and here are the results.
Fig 2.1.5 Revised (2/11/2025)

Mr Max approved on the second one but for the third one I still need to make a few changes to it. So I fixed it again in Ai. Then he said to remove some of the elements and lines to have a cleaner workspace for the body paragraph, so I did what he told me to do. After that, Mr Max said to start making the layouts first in In Design and later he will check on it. Here are the approved layout designs for 'Bauhaus : The Movement That Changed Design'.

FEEDBACK
Week 6
General Feedback : a tutorial on how to make task 2, from the sketches, digitalization in AI and making the layouts in ID.
Specific Feedback :  The 1st sketch is good but I can edit some parts and add more elements, the 3rd sketch is okay but needs some editing. In the meantime, I can come up with more sketches first. The new sketch is kind of boring but it's okay. Can proceed to the digitalization.

Week 7
General Feedback : finishing up the headlines and start to move to in design so we can finish before the deadline.
Specific Feedback :  The 1st header is good, can proceed to In Design. Need to make the font bigger for the second design. Need to make a new one for the 3rd design.
Second design already okay but still need to work more on the third design. Remove some of the lines and elements from all the designs to make space for the body paragraph and do some adjustments to the headline before moving to in design. Make some changes on some parts because some areas looks empty.

REFLECTION

Experience
I was struggling with how to make the designs not look boring. I chose Bauhaus because I thought it would be simple but it is still quite complicated to do because I couldn't think of any good ideas. After sketching, I moved to Ai to digitalize the sketch and during this process, I made a lot of changes to the design until I get the approval from Mr Max. This task overall helped me understand the importance of layouts and headers when designing an article.

Observations
From this task, I realized that the way we design headers and layouts plays a huge role on making it readable to the audience and controls the flow when we read. I also started getting used to using In Design and can understand the tools better compared to task 1. I also learned a lot on how to make a headline more interesting and control the flow of the readability.

Findings
I realized that designing layouts with minimal elements and only in black and white can be a little difficult because I can't use colours to express the certain words. Also I learned how to design layouts that are simple and minimalistic but not too boring.

The book that I chose is called 'Typographic Design: Form and Communication'. I read one part called structure and space (page 79 on the pdf, page 65 on the book) that explains that spacing is a common denominator for all typographic communication. Space creates subliminal divisions and it can create spatial structure. Some placements of a single letterform can affect the way the viewers sees it. This page has a lot of examples that can help the readers understand more about the importance of spacing an structure in typography because it can very much affect the readability and aesthetic of the typographic design itself.
