Development :
From the 3 sketches above, I decided to go with the first sketch. I
decided to go for a similar vibe as the chosen artwork on the previous
task. Before starting on the rendering, I decided to make a colour palette
first. Here is the reference for the colour palette.

Then I colour picked the feathers on the body, chest, and head area to get a
clear colour palette of the bird. After that, I started making some
adjustments to get more shades of the colours. Here is the colour
palette.

After that, I started colouring the base colours for my artwork using the
colour palette above. I also decided to paint the background a gray-ish blue
to help bring out the base colours and also because painting on a white
canvas hurts my eyes. I separated the elements in different layers to make
it easier to work with. For the base colour, I used a default brush called
dip pen hard.

Then, I started rendering like how I usually render. For the skin, I played
with different shades from the base colour. For the rest of the elements, I
mainly use the colour palette that I made and played with the values.
Throughout the whole rendering proces I used the brushes below and just
played with the opacity. For the wings, I use the flat brush (the everything
brush) to achieve the messy rendering style, also to make it less
smooth.

I decided to play with the colours for the wings on the head by adding
some light blues, purples, and greens to add a reflection/lighting effect
which the actual species has. For the wings, I used a flat blending brush to keep the messy look.

Throughout the rendering process, I had the most trouble rendering the hair. I
redid the hair 3 or 4 times because I was very unsatisfied with it (can be
seen in the speedpaint). Then, I started analysing an artist that I like on
Instagram to reference the way she drew the hair. After a lot of trials and
errors, I was finally done with the hair. I used the default hair brush from
IbisPaintX.

I also used a lot of the filters and effects on IbisPaintX to make some
adjustments during the rendering process, especially the blur filter and the
adjust colour filter (which are very visible on the crown). For the eyes, I
decided to reference the actual species and give her a very saturated red
colour.

Then, I continued rendering the artwork. I played with the colours and kept
the messy rendering style, especially for the wings. For the background, I
applied the gaussian blur effect to shift the focus more on the character.
Here is the finished artwork.

Rationale
This artwork was inspired by a fanart made for the song "elf" by Ado which
has a bird themed illustration (from the chosen artwork). I kept the bird
theme on the illustration but I changed the bird species to a different one.
I did some research on a couple of bird species and decided to do a species
called victoria crowned pigeon.
I made this design resemble the actual species, from the colour palette,
appearance, and feathers. The serious/angry facial expression resembles the
actual nature of the species where they are known to be aggressive in the
wild. I made this illustration to show power and royalty, hence the crown,
clothes, and pearl necklace, also the title being "Victoria's Crown", a
serious and aggressive queen with a unique crown. I tried to keep some of
the species' appearance, like the long nose to resemble the beak, saturated
eyes, crown pattern, etc. The background is to further emphasize the unique
feather pattern from the species.
I made the eyes the most saturated colour from the rest of the artwork to
draw the focus to the overall face and expression the character has, it also
shows the contrast of colours between the eyes and the rest of the
colour palette. The wings are also equally placed on the head to mimic the
way a birds wings are symmetrically balanced. I also placed the
character on the centre to further emphasize the balance on the
wings, background, and other elements. The elements on the illustration are
all in a similar colour palette to keep a harmonious outcome. I also
decided to repeat some of the elements, especially the crown feathers and
wings, which adds repetition to the drawing.
Some principles changed from the original/chosen artwork, the original
artwork has rule of thirds, principle of similarity, and unity. I removed
those principles to change the style and overall look so it is different
from the chosen artwork but still kept the same vibe to it. Also because I
wanted to focus on the actual species of the bird, hence why I added
contrast and symmetrical balance.

FEEDBACK
Week 7 : It looks great, don't forget to explain the work from the
Design Principles point of view, add the selected artwork in the
beginning so we see where you came from.
Also show the Ado fanart as well, since it is mentioned there. The
design principles has to be more important in the rationale.
Explain the difference of principles from the chosen artwork and your
artwork.
REFLECTION
From this module, I learned a lot about how to apply the design principles
in my artwork. The rendering took a while to finish but I am quite
satisfied with the final outcome. Overall, I quite enjoy doing the
assignment for this module and it wasn't as stressful as I thought it
would be. Again, I finished this task way too soon.
