Rationale
This artwork was inspired by a fanart made for the song "elf" by Ado which has a bird themed illustration (from the chosen artwork). I kept the bird theme on the illustration but I changed the bird species to a different one. I did some research on a couple of bird species and decided to do a species called victoria crowned pigeon.

I made this design resemble the actual species, from the colour palette, appearance, and feathers. The serious/angry facial expression resembles the actual nature of the species where they are known to be aggressive in the wild. I made this illustration to show power and royalty, hence the crown, clothes, and pearl necklace, also the title being "Victoria's Crown", a serious and aggressive queen with a unique crown. I tried to keep some of the species' appearance, like the long nose to resemble the beak, saturated eyes, crown pattern, etc. The background is to further emphasize the unique feather pattern from the species.

I made the eyes the most saturated colour from the rest of the artwork to draw the focus to the overall face and expression the character has, it also shows the contrast of colours between the eyes and the rest of the colour palette. The wings are also equally placed on the head to mimic the way a birds wings are symmetrically balanced. I also placed the character on the centre to further emphasize the balance on the wings, background, and other elements. The elements on the illustration are all in a similar colour palette to keep a harmonious outcome. I also decided to repeat some of the elements, especially the crown feathers and wings, which adds repetition to the drawing.

Some principles changed from the original/chosen artwork, the original artwork has rule of thirds, principle of similarity, and unity. I removed those principles to change the style and overall look so it is different from the chosen artwork but still kept the same vibe to it. Also because I wanted to focus on the actual species of the bird, hence why I added contrast and symmetrical balance.

REFLECTION

What have I learnt in this module?
Throughout this module, I've learnt about the types of design principles in artworks/design. I also learnt how to apply some of the principles in my own illustration. I spent quite some time researching the types of design principles for task 1 and it helped me understand the different types of design principles. Knowing the types of design principles helped me improve my knowledge and can help me improve my designs/artworks in the future.

What did I enjoy the most?
The part that I enjoyed the most about the tasks was that I could create an artwork in my preferred style. Since I love creating human illustrations, I like the fact that I could do what I love for this assignment. Applying design principles in the artwork was something new to me but it was pretty fun as well. I also enjoyed looking at different artworks created by multiple talented artists and learning quite a lot of things from them, especially how to apply design principles in the illustration.

What did I not enjoy the most?
Honestly, there wasn't really anything that I didn't enjoy from this module. Most of the time, I find the tasks to be quite doable and sometimes easy to do. Sometimes I just don't enjoy making the blogs and having to explain my process, but I still manage to get through with it and finished way to fast.

What have I learnt about myself through this module?
Something that I learned about myself is that I pay attention to details quite seriously than I thought. In task 1, we were asked to look for reference pictures for the design principles and that task made me realize that this module is very detail focused. I also learned that I go through a flow-state where I would be so focused on doing a certain task that I would forget about anything and everything. Due to that, I finish this task too fast. But, even so, I am quite proud with the final outcome, especially after going through art block.

What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
Changes that I experienced is the way that I have accepted that creating an illustration doesn't have to be 100% perfect. I leaned to colour freely and to actually like my messy artwork/rendering style. Another thing is the way that I now focus on the design principles when creating my artwork. I used to just draw without caring about anything, but this module helped me realize the importance of principles in an artwork. One thing that didn't change through this learning journey is my laziness on doing the blog. I have always enjoyed doing the tasks but I don't really like doing the blog, but in the end I still have to do it.

What are my aspirations?
I'm still not quite sure about my aspirations. I do enjoy creating art, especially illustrations and I want to further explore and expand my skills. But sometimes I go through art blocks that could go on for months and that affects my skills. Overall, I aspire to continue my journey of learning art/design to improve my skills and be satisfied with my artwork.
